About the Photographer Behind the Lens
KARLEST FORD
Born and raised on Detroit's east side, Karl is one of six children, with three sisters and two brothers. His father worked in the automotive industry, first at Ford Motor Company and later at General Motors, while his mother was a devoted homemaker who ensured Karl and his siblings started each day with love, encouragement, and discipline.
Karl enjoyed a happy childhood surrounded by family and friends. There were always playmates nearby, including his siblings and cousins who lived in the flat above the family's home. As a young boy, he took on a newspaper route, an experience that taught him responsibility and a strong work ethic. While delivering newspapers, he became fascinated by the photographs on the front pages. Using the money he earned, he purchased his first camera for $10 from Reed's Drug Store—a purchase that sparked a lifelong passion for photography.
Karl graduated from Detroit Public Schools before attending the Center for Creative Studies School of Art and Design, where he majored in Photography. Throughout his education, Karl was inspired by his parents' unwavering belief that he could succeed at anything he dedicated himself to. Although they had hoped he would become a dentist, they fully supported his decision to pursue a career in photography.
While still in school, Karl began building his professional experience by working in a portrait studio and in General Motors' photographic department. He later gained valuable experience in several photo laboratories throughout the Detroit area. In 1982, he joined one of Detroit's leading hospitals as its Corporate Photographer, documenting public relations events as well as medical procedures, combining technical expertise with artistic vision.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Karl is deeply committed to his family and community. He and his wife, Nancy, have built a loving family together and are the proud parents of two children, Kristopher and Kimberly, and the grandparents of three energetic grandchildren.
Karl has devoted years to community service and leadership. He has served as both a deacon and an elder at St. John's Presbyterian Church and has been an active board member of the Detroit Rotary the Historic Indian Village Association and the St. John Hospital Guild. His life reflects a commitment to excellence, service, faith, family, and the art of capturing meaningful moments through photography.
